HBO wanted The Idol to be something big. Or at least that the behind-the-scenes dramas would not overshadow the reception of the new series he had developed with his beloved Sam Levinson, responsible for the smash hit Euphoria. The Idol, which portrays the entry into a cult of an ambitious actress, has transcended a very unstable atmosphere on the set and a notable deviation in the approach when Amy Seimetz was removed from the project, and Levinson with the connivance of The Weeknd (who plays the leader of the sect) took over. The series, as it turned out, had a preview premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, no less.
The reviews were not generous. The criticism starts with The Weeknd and his poor performance, but that's not where it ends. There is also the superficiality of the story and the sexualization of Lily-Rose Depp (Jhonny Depp's daughter). Once it arrived on HBO two weeks ago the reviews held up, but along with solid ratings that made one think that the series would succeed despite everything. But those ratings dropped 12% with the second episode, and then Page Six reported that The Idol would only last one season.
The media outlet claims that Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd), creator of the series, is not really thinking in making a second season, as the series is indeed, a limited series. However, the door is open for the future of The Idol. Likewise, HBO had to intervene and clarify the rumors. According to the network, the series finale is not yet official, so we could see more of The Idol in the future.
So for now, it's time to enjoy what The Weeknd has created for his fans.
