A 'Red Sonja' live action remake has been in the works since 2008, and it has been a production full of up and downs and people leaving and new people coming into the project, originally a production by filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and starring Rose McGowan, but that didn't happen.
In this span of 16 years, there has been a lot of actresses starring as Red Sonja and directors leading this project, but the film is now finally in post production and has landed a distribution deal for late 2025 with Samuel Goldwyn Films, with British director M. J. Bassett ('Deathwatch') at the front of the film with a screenplay by Tasha Huo, the writer of 'Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft' series for Netflix.
Matilda Lutz ('Revenge') is the one bringing the title character to life in this new iteration, alongside British actress Wallis Day ('Sex/Life') as Dark Annisia, Sonja's half sister and one of the main villains of this story, with German actress Veronica Ferres playing Sonja's mother. Other iconic personalities in the cast include Robert Sheehan ('The Umbrella Academy'), Michael Bisping ('Den of Thieves'), British bodybuilder Martyn Ford and many other new names.
The film will follow Red Sonja (Lutz) reuniting a group of warriors in order to bring down the tyrant Draygan (Bisping) and his bride Dark Annisia (Day), who are oppresing her people and terrorizing everyone with their strenght.
There's not a premiere date yet, but we know that Samuel Goldwyn Films is planning on releasing it later this year, so we might be seeing a first trailer for this in the second half of the year.
