American filmmaker Jay Roach, known for his Austin Powers' series, is making a comeback after 6 years with 'The Roses', an adapted screenplay by Tony McNamara, the writer behind Oscar winning films like 'The Favourite' and 'Poor Things'.
This time a Roach is staying close to his comedy roots with an adaptation of the 1989 film of the same name by Danny DeVito, this time starring British actors Benedict Cumberbatch ('Doctor Strange') and Oscar winner Olivia Colman ('The Favourite') as our main couple. Kate McKinnon ('Barbie'), Andy Samberg ('Palm Springs'), Allison Janney ('Another Simple Favor') and Ncuti Gatwa ('Barbie').
The comedy will follow rich couple Theo (Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Colman) as they fall out of love and grow resentful of each other after his career starts failing and her business starts succeding and growing every day. With their picture perfect life falling apart and everyone getting in the middle of it, they'll have to manage keeping appearances.
Expectations are high for this project, being the comeback of Jay Roach after his last film 'Bombshell' six years ago and with McNamara coming from two Oscar nominated scripts, not to mention that the original film was a success both critically and financially.
Searchlight has the distribution rights for this reimagining in the US, and the film is going to be opening in theaters this August 29, hopefully with a similar date for the worlwide premiere. Let's wait and see who will be taking care of the worlwide distribution.
