Netflix has made official the announcement of the movie that will close the popular series Peaky Blinders. Cillian Murphy will return to play Thomas Shelby and will also serve as producer.
The platform announced on its social networks: “By order of Tommy Shelby: a Peaky Blinders movie is coming to Netflix”, accompanied by a photo of the script. The cover clearly reads: A Peaky Blinders Film along with Cillian Murphy's name in large letters. Murphy, who won an Oscar for his performance in Oppenheimer, said in a statement, “It seems Tommy Shelby wasn't finished with me…. It's very gratifying to be back collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is for the fans.”
Steven Knight, creator of the series, will continue to serve as the film's screenwriter, though this time the direction under the hands of Tom Harper, known for his work on several episodes of the series' early seasons. “When I first directed Peaky Blinders more than 10 years ago, we didn't know what the series would become, but we did know there was something about the alchemy of casting and writing that seemed explosive,” Harper said in a statement.
The last season of Peaky Blinders left viewers with an open ending. In it, Tommy Shelby discovered that the disease he thought he had was actually a hoax by his doctor, in collusion with Nazi leader Oswald Mosley. This dramatic twist not only added tension to the plot, but left a clear hint as to the film's starting point.
Production on the film will begin later this year and will be in association with BBC Film. By now, there are not details about the plot or additional cast.
