After several months of suspense and little news, Amazon and MGM Studios confirmed that a new Tomb Raider series is in the works. This news comes a year after the first announcement that the actress and screenwriter, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, was working on a project to bring Lara Croft back to the screen.
Waller-Bridge is not only known for creating and starring in the Fleabag series, she was also actively involved in both the Indiana Jones and James Bond sagas. “There's so much I can incorporate. The character of Lara Croft takes inspiration from those of Indiana Jones and James Bond. So there's a lot, and it just seemed like the perfect final step in my own personal adventure through these kinds of franchises,” she acknowledged in a previous interview.
“Phoebe has a lifelong love affair with Lara Croft and very soon we will begin the search for who will play this iconic role. I simply can't wait,” said Jennifer Salke of Amazon and MGM during the announcement this Tuesday, May 14. “We really love that Crystal Dynamics has entrusted Amazon with this iconic franchise, and we can't wait to see where this collaboration takes us,” added Christoph Hartmann of Amazon Games.
It is worth mentioning that this would be the third attempt to adapt Crystal Dynamics' successful video game series into live-action productions, after the films starring Angelina Jolie in the early 2000s and the 2018 film starring Swedish actress Alicia Vikander. On the other hand, although the rights to the franchise since 2022 belong to Amazon (the company that acquired MGM), Netflix has its own animated series on the way. The title is Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, and will be available in 2024.
