Geralt of Rivia has a new face. Netflix's hit dark fantasy series, The Witcher, returns with a renewed protagonist: Liam Hemsworth. The Hunger Games actor takes over the role from Henry Cavill, who was at the helm for the first three seasons. In fact, the news of Cavill's departure surprised fans in October 2022. In a publication shared on social networks, he said goodbye to the role with an emotional message.
His retirement coincided with the announcement of his return to the DC Universe as Superman. However, the latter project never came to fruition due to the complete overhaul of the franchise. Still, there was no turning back. And Netflix has already released the first look of Hemsworth as Geralt, complete with white hair and the iconic wolf medallion, offering his interpretation of the monster hunter.
In addition, the fourth and fifth installments will adapt the three remaining novels in the saga created by Andrzej Sapkowski: Baptism of Fire, The Swallow Tower and Lady of the Lake. Returning to the cast are Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Ciri, Joey Batey as Jaskier, Cassie Clare as Philippa Eilhart and Mahesh Jadu as Vilgefortz of Roggeveen.
As explained by producer Tomasz Bagiński in an interview with Wyborcza, in the fourth part of The Witcher, we will see a scene recreating the big fight of the third season, but with Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia instead of Henry Cavill. The explanation is metafictional: the scene will be part of a story that parents tell to children a century after the events of the series. Over time, the legend has been modified and embellished, and the fight between Geralt and Vilgefortz became a myth.
Although the new season has no premiere date, it should arrive later this year.
