In 2014, the first installment of The Maze Runner, the teen sci-fi film adapting the novel by author James Dashner, hit theaters around the world and eventually ended up becoming a film trilogy. Now, just six years after the release of the last film, it is official that they are working on a reboot of the franchise. In a surprise move, reports surfaced that 20th Century Studios (Avatar, Deadpool) is in talks with screenwriter Jack Paglen to write the new script. Paglen previously worked on Alien: Covenant and the feature film Transcendence, starring Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean).
With respect to the reboot, it will not seek to start the story from scratch or continue directly with the sequel to the third film. Instead, the company plans to tell a new story that maintains a connection to the elements that captivated audiences in the original film. This approach follows the model used in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which explored the franchise's universe through subtle references rather than repeating the familiar plot.
The first installment follows a young man named Thomas, who wakes up in a place known as The Glade, a field surrounded by walls with two gates that open every morning, revealing an immense labyrinth. None of the imprisoned youths remember who they are. Before night falls and the gates close to protect them from murderous creatures, the residents of the claustrophobic space explore the labyrinth in search of a way out, or at least answers as to why they are locked in there.
Wes Ball, director of the original films, will return to this reboot as producer alongside Ellen Goldsmith-Vein (Stargirl) and Lee Stollman (Life of Crime).
