The Crow is ready to make its nest at Lionsgate. The 1994 cult classic that starred Brandon Lee in his last film role will get a reboot, this time with Bill Skarsgård in the lead role. Production wrapped last year and one of the most recent developments is that Lionsgate has picked up the rights to its distribution thanks to an eight-figure deal. In fact, the Wednesday the deal finalized in the run-up to the Toronto International Film Festival, which runs Sept. 7-17 according to Deadline. The film will release in 2024, 30 years after the original.
"We appreciate what the Raven character and the original film mean to legions of fans and believe this new film will offer audiences an authentic and visceral reinterpretation of his emotional power and mythology," said Lionsgate executive Charlotte Koh. At the moment, The Crow is in post-production and it is unknown through which streaming platform will be available in Latin America and Spain after its theatrical debut. Rupert Sanders will direct the new adaptation of The Crow. He is responsible for the film with Scarlett Johansson, Ghost in the Shell. According to the producers, this installment seeks to respect the legacy, but retaking the already known story for a new audience.
In fact, in the 1994 film directed by Alex Proyas, a raven brings poetic guitarist Eric Draven back to life a year after he and his fiancée are murdered. It guides him through the land of the living, leading him to his killers. The film was the last performance of Bruce Lee's son, Brandon Lee, after an accident on the set ended his life. This production also adapted the graphic novel of the same name, first published by Caliber Comics in 1989.
