Compared to the James Bond saga and presented as the new big bet in spy movies, Argylle failed to meet the expectations that Apple TV+ generated around the film. Directed by Matthew Vaughn and with a cast led by Bryce Dallas Howard, Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Dua Lipa and Samuel L. Jackson, the title had a disappointing first week of release, grossing $35 million, a minimal figure in relation to its hefty budget. The lack of public interest was matched by the disdain of critics, who gave it a 34% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Since its announcement in 2021, when the rights already belonged to AppleTV+ for a price of 200M, there has been speculation that this would be the start of a new franchise consisting of at least three parts combining action, intrigue and comedy, and eventually crossover with the Kingsman film series. But neither its large investment nor the outstanding talent can ensure that the initial plans will come to fruition.
"I guess it just remains to see how it works," Rockwell said in an interview conducted by Variety ahead of the feature's arrival in theaters. While Cavill added: "It all depends on whether the audience likes what we've done." Both said they are willing to return to the project if there's a sequel. John Cena, another cast member, also made public his hope for sequels and spin-offs: "I hope the world says yes, and that would mean they will see and enjoy Argylle. I know Matthew has a plan and I wish he could execute it. Hopefully we can get together again," he said.
