While Bong Joon-Ho became world-renowned with his 2019 hit Parasite, winner of multiple Oscars including Best Picture and Best Foreign Language Film, his film career already boasted several notable titles prior to this milestone. These include Snowpiercer, Memories of Murder and Okja. Now, the South Korean director is preparing for his next project, Mickey 17, whose release date has been announced.
January 31, 2025 will be the new release date for Mickey 17, which was originally scheduled for March 2024. This change in the release schedule came about due to changes in Warner Bros. distribution strategy, prompted by actor and screenwriter strikes. The film will now coincide with the Lunar New Year in South Korea, a major holiday in the country.
Although its release is still almost a year away, the feature will face stiff competition at the box office. As revealed in a report, among the most prominent rivals are the new installment of the charismatic Paddington and DreamWorks Animation's upcoming Dog Man.
Mickey 17 is a science fiction film based on the book of the same name by Edward Ashton, published during the year 2022. The plot follows a robot sent to another planet with the aim of exploring and, ideally, colonizing it. However, he will have to face his own clone, who seeks to usurp his place. The cast includes prominent stars such as Robert Pattinson (The Batman), Toni Collette (The Devil's Legacy), Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), Mark Ruffalo (The Avengers) and Naomi Ackie (Master of None).
Although it is one of the most anticipated films, audiences will have to wait until next year to find out what this exciting story has in store for us.
