Following its world premiere in Paris, the early reactions to Oppenheimer are now available, the new film from award-winning director Christopher Nolan. In fact, the feature film adapting the book American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin exceeded critics' expectations, notes Variety. Cillian Murphy, a favorite Nolan talent, carries the development of a complex and devastating story on his shoulders.
The film, which lasts almost three hours, follows J. Robert Oppenheimer, theoretical physicist of the Manhattan Project, who was in charge of the research that resulted in the creation of the atomic bomb in World War II. Triumph or tragedy? The paradox in the life of the protagonist is told with the visual and technical display that characterizes the filmmaker.
In fact, the impressive cast working on Oppenheimer includes Emily Blunt as biologist Katherine, wife of the protagonist. In addition, Oscar winner Matt Damon brings to life General Leslie Groves, director of the Manhattan Project and Robert Downey Jr. will be Lewis Strauss, a member of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. Florence Puch, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett and Rami Malek are also key players in the drama.
"It's Nolan's most extraordinary work, in the sense that it combines his visual prowess with one of the best explorations of a character made in recent American cinema," noted critic Kenneth Turan for the Los Angeles Times. In addition, the editor of the publication Total Film added his praise for the director of Tenet and Interstellar for his handling of "tension, structure, scale, sound and photography".
The film Oppenheimer will hit theaters on July 21.
