Deadpool and Wolverine has only been in theaters around the world for a week and has already become the sensation of the year. The third installment in the saga of Ryan Reynolds' epic character has grossed more than $550 million worldwide according to Variety. The superhero sequel, directed by Shawn Levy and with the expected return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, is the best opening so far this year.
Deadpool and Wolverine continues to break records as they just beat Joker's box office's hit for the biggest opening day for an R-rated movie. Joker, the film about the clown of crime's origin, made $13.9 million on its opening day in 2019, but Deadpool and Wolverine crushed that with $25.3 million in a single day, becoming into a huge accomplishment for the two superheroes.
Joker grossed over $1 billion at the box office. Todd Phillips' film stands alone as the only R-rated movie to surpass this milestone. Following closely behind is Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan's biopic of the atomic bomb creator starring Cillian Murphy, which earned over $975 million worldwide.
However, we are also awaiting the eagerly awaited release of Joker: Folie à Deux, which is scheduled for October 4th this year, that could break its own record and surpass Deadpool and Wolverine just a few months after.
If Deadpool and Wolverine crosses the $1 billion mark the following weeks, the next step will also be to try to become the highest grossing film of the year. At the moment, only Inside Out 2 holds that title, followed by "Dune: Part 2" and "Despicable me 4". Nevertheless, everything points to Disney being the winner of the 2024 box office.
