The recent film adaptations of the sci-fi epic Dune inspired by Frank Hebert's work have been a resounding success in theaters worldwide. As a consequence of this, after the release of two installments directed by Denis Villeneuve (and the confirmation of a third on the way), this universe will now be part of HBO and Max's screen. Dune: Prophecy is a series that will function as a prequel to Villeneuve's work set 10,000 years before Paul Atreides' rise to power. This time, the story will follow two Harkonnen sisters who confront forces that threaten humanity, leading them to establish the legendary Bene Gesserit sisterhood.
Inspired by the novel Sisterhood of Dune, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, Dune: The Prophecy began with the goal of expanding the universe beyond the movies. From the beginning, it sought a different approach than the film adaptations, aiming for a narrative focused on the politics and intrigue within the Bene Gesserit brotherhood. Legendary Television commissioned the series in 2019, with several creative figures joining that year. After multiple creative revisions, Lost's Alison Schapker became the showrunner. After facing multiple challenges that included the coronavirus pandemic, filming finally began in November 2022 and concluded in December 2023.
Olivia Williams and Emily Watson will play Tula and Valya Harkonnen, the protagonist sisters in this story. As for the behind-the-scenes team, Denis Villeneuve will return to the world of Dune as executive producer. The first season of Dune: The Prophecy will feature six episodes and is co-produced by Legendary Television. As part of HBO's original content, this prequel series will premiere in November on HBO and will also be available for streaming on Max.
