This weekend will have one of the most anticipated premieres of the year, and that is House of the Dragon. The second season of the Game of Thrones spin-off series has very good news and that is that there will be Dragons, Targaryens and a lot of fire for a while longer. Based on the book "Fire & Blood" by George R.R. Martin, House of the Dragon takes us to the Targaryen dynasty in Westeros. The action takes place almost 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and about 100 years after the Targaryens united the Seven Kingdoms. Its story takes us to the struggle for the Iron Throne, which will lead to a civil war between the Dragon family.
House of the Dragon, co-created by Ryan Condal and "Thrones" author George RR Martin, has proven to be a mammoth success for HBO. The Targaryen story enjoyed the largest premiere audience ever for an original series for both HBO and the streaming service HBO Max, now known as Max. The first season, premiering in 2022, averaged 29 million viewers per episode online and streaming. Just a week after the premiere, HBO announced the renewal for Season 2.
Now it didn't take a week on the air, as HBO announced that House of the Dragon will extend its story for a third season. "George, Ryan and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast and crew have reached new heights with this phenomenal second season," said HBO's head of programming and drama series, Francesca Orsi. Dates for the new season, such as shooting and premiere, were not announced.
