In 2022, HBO surprised a good part of its audience with the sudden cancellation of the series Westworld after four seasons. The news came after its co-creators, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, expressed their desire to close the story with a fifth and final installment. Although the professional duo has been working on new challenges, including the ambitious adaptation of Fallout, they are still not giving up hope of being able to give a proper closure to the story of the androids. During a recent interview Nolan acknowledged that they are willing to revisit that universe if the opportunity presents itself, and even admitted that they had a plan outlined.
"We're completists," Nolan said when asked about the possibility of revisiting the Westworld universe. "It took me eight years and a change of director to make Interstellar. We'd like to finish the story we started. I'm very proud of what we've done. It was an extraordinary experience. I think it would be a mistake to look back and regret how it ended. But there's still a lot of desire to finish it," he acknowledged. When the showrunner was asked if they had something in mind in the form of a movie or special, he added, "Lisa and I had a plan from the beginning. We like to finish our stories when we can. If there's an opportunity at some point, we'll certainly take it."
Although there is still no sign of a return for Westworld, Nolan and Joy are ready to continue exploring sci-fi worlds. Their next stop will be Fallout, the adaptation of Bethesda 's popular video game that will make its debut on Prime Video on April 11.
