If elevated horror had only one representative, it would be Ari Aster. The 37-year-old filmmaker is revolutionizing the genre with works such as Hereditary and Midsommar, which move away from the brutal and gory to focus on presenting artful cinematography and dark storytelling. Now, the director will kick off his latest film, Eddington. The title is capturing the attention of audiences and critics alike by bringing together a cast of high-caliber actors, including Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O'Connell, Micheal Ward and Clifton Collins Jr.
A24 is in charge of financing and production, marking the sixth collaboration between the distributor and Aster. Although plot details are being still under wraps, Variety revealed that the western follows a sheriff with big aspirations who, along with his wife, arrives in a small New Mexico town. Coincidentally, the couple runs out of gas on the highway and, although at first people greet them warmly, the scenario turns nightmarish as night falls.
With a script develope under his responsibility, Aster also assumes the role of producer alongside Lars Knudsen, with whom he worked on the dark comedy The Dream Man and Death of a Unicorn, yet to be released. In addition, he establishes an alliance with Oscar-winning cinematographer Darius Khondji, whose previous experience includes acclaimed films such as Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths.
Eddington was about to be Aster's debut six years ago, prior to the release of Hereditary. In a 2018 Reddit AMA [question and answer], he first revealed details about the fiction, describing it as a revisionist project. In his words, "it's contemporary, with one foot in the western and one foot in the noir genre. So it's like a film noir dark comedy."
