Following the legacy of its successful predecessors Band of Brothers and The Pacific, the new collaboration between Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, Masters of the Air, has just premiered on Apple TV+ with its first two episodes. The project offers a complementary and in-depth look at World War II, focusing on the courageous work of the 8th Air Force in its fight against Nazi Germany.
Based on the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller, the narrative details the bombing missions carried out by the 100th Bomb Group, nicknamed Bloody Hundredth, a team that face extremely dangerous conditions at over 25,000 feet, including freezing cold and lack of oxygen, as well as the constant terror of falling in combat. The program seeks to explore the physical challenges and the psychological and emotional toll these young men paid in their struggle to defeat Hitler's Third Reich.
The cast of the series stars Austin Butler, the Oscar nominee for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in the 2022 film. Other notable names include Callum Turner (Fantastic Animals), Barry Keoghan (Saltburn), Nate Mann, Anthony Boyle, Rafferty Law, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook and Ncuti Gatwa. Cary Fukunaga (No Time to Die) directs the first three episodes, while John Orloff (Band of Brothers) was in charge of the screenplay.
When they're not in the air, the setting takes in barracks, Germanic prisoner-of-war camps, entertainment centers and a military base that was built to life-size. The filming of the so-called Masters of the Air took place in the picturesque English region of Buckinghamshire, offering an immersive experience with faithful recreations of the intensity and brutality of warfare at the time.
