Disney this year is celebrating a centenary since its inception and as expected, they have celebrated with a film. 'Wish' is the company's way of saying thank you to all their fans for all these years. The film, as we have become accustomed to, features a Princess who must face challenges and overcome evil. There is no doubt that along with its animation (which combines the 2D and 3D characteristic of the house of the mouse) and story, fans will be imbued with nostalgia. However, this doesn't seem to have moved audiences enough so far, as its approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes barely reaches 50 percent. In the case of critics, the outlook is more encouraging, with 83 percent.
According to its official synopsis, the story introduces the magical kingdom of Rosas, where "Asha, an ingenious dreamer, makes a wish so powerful that it is heard by a cosmic force: a small sphere of unlimited energy called Estrella. Both face an imposing enemy, King Magnificent, whom they must defeat to save their community and prove that when the will of a brave person meets the magic of the stars, wonderful things can happen."
Benjamin Lee for The Guardian: "The film comes at a turbulent time for Disney, with centenary celebrations marred by underperforming films and a muddled overall release strategy. Seeing all the tried and tested elements fail to come together makes us nostalgic for the classics. Let's all hope that Disney finds that magic again."
Amy Nicholson for The New York Times: "Interestingly, and rather fascinatingly, it's a film about a spiritual revolution. The question is, can Asha, a humanist, convince the islanders to reject the man in the embroidered robe who preaches that only he can perform miracles?"
Devan Coggan for Entertainment Weekly: "Wish is so obsessed with the past that it doesn't bring anything new to the table on its own. If you're going to pay homage to 100 years of Disney magic, you can't forget to keep a little magic for yourself."
Wish is now playing on theaters. Go and watch it and make your own opinion.
