Wes Anderson comes to Netflix for the first time. The acclaimed director of films such as The Eccentric Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic has adapted Roald Dahl's 'Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar' and Six More and chose the N giant as home for the premiere. The first story to hit the platform is the highly anticipate medium-length film The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, which will premiere on September 27. The official synopsis for this medium-length film announces, "In this endearing Roald Dahl story, a rich man discovers the existence of a guru who can see without using his eyes and decides to learn to master that ability to cheat at games of chance." The cast is led by Ralph Fiennes, Ben Kingsley, Benedict Cumberbatch and Dev Patel.
This is the second time that Anderson adapts Dahl, having previously done so in 2007 with The Fantastic Mr. Zorro. On the other hand, and in addition to the aforementioned film, the director will be training three other shorts that will arrive in the last days of this month: The Swan (9/28), The Rat Catcher (9/29) and Poison (9/30).
Regarding the platform rather than theatrical release, Anderson revealed, "Because it's a 37-minute film, Netflix is the perfect place to host it, because it's not really a movie. They used to do these things at the BBC, with so-called Play for Today, directed by people like Stephen Frears, John Schlesinger or Alan Clarke. They were one-hour programs or even less. I imagined something like that.
As for the constructing part, the American director told Netflix, "When I finally had the moment of inspiration, the idea was, 'I'm just as interested in the way Dahl tells the story as I am in the story itself.'
