The DC film universe has had numerous bumps in the road since its conception. It looks like things could change radically in the future, now that there are new presidents calling the shots at the studio. However, not everyone is happy with the changes they have proposed. And, among them, is Dwayne Johnson, who points out that he doesn't quite understand the cancellation of the Black Adam franchise.
In an interview with Kevin Hart on his show Hart to Hart, Dwayne Johnson expressed his feelings about the debut and farewell of his DCEU antihero in 2022. According to the performer, the decision not to continue with the franchise is inconsistent considering the film's strengths: "[The cancellation of the Black Adam franchise] will always be a big mystery, not just to me, but to our industry. You have the biggest opening of your career. Sure, without China, which could have added $100 million or $200 million more dollars. You have a superhero and you want to grow the franchise. You bring back Superman and Henry Cavill, which made everyone crazy. And we created a diverse portfolio of superheroes, where we have men and women of color in Black Adam."
Given those points, Johnson points out that the film did not benefit from experiencing so many leadership changes at its production company. The actor refers to when James Gunn and Peter Safran became the new president and CEO of DC Studios. Following the news, Gunn and Safran announced a complete restructuring for the DC Cinematic Universe. Consequently, numerous franchise cancellations became official, including Black Adam: "Black Adam got caught in the vortex of new leadership. There were too many changes in leadership."
