For the first time since the beginning of his career, Ethan Coen will bring us a solo film without his brother Joel. The film already has a title, Drive-Away Dolls, which is scheduled for release on September 22nd of this year. Drive-Away Dolls will have Pedro Pascal and Matt Demon as part of its cast, and in fact, it will be the first time the two have acted together since the film The Great Wall.
The movie will revolve around crime, but in reality, it will be a comedy. It will star Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan. The story follows Jamie, an uninhibited free spirit who has just broken up with his girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian, who desperately needs to relax. Looking for a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip through Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals. Ethan Coen will not only direct the film, but also co-write it with his wife Tricia Cooke, and both are producers along with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.
Qualley, Viswanathan, Pascal and Damon are not the only actors in Ethan's production, as the cast also includes Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo and Bill Camp. The Coen brothers' latest project was The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, a 2018 production. Since then, the brothers have not worked together again. This will be Ethan's first solo film, however, his brother Joel already went ahead a couple of years ago, exactly in 2021, when he announced The Tragedy of Macbeth. Rumors about possible rifts between the two immediately spread. However, the youngest Coen was in charge of denying it last year in Cannes.
