Taylor Lautner has recalled one of the most catastrophic moments in VMAs history. During the latest episode of the podcast he shares with his wife, Taylor Lautner & Taylor Lautner, the actor stated that one moment he regrets the most is when he didn't support his ex-girlfriend, Taylor Swift, during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards when Kanye West infamously interrupted her. What exactly happened at that awards ceremony was: Taylor Swift and Beyoncé were competing for the MTV Award for best video of the year; which, in the end, was won by Swift for "You Belong With Me". Taylor Lautner, her partner at the time, was chosen to present her with the award during the ceremony.
A few seconds into her thank you speech, Kanye West took the microphone away from the singer and also began to discredit Swift (and the awards themselves) claiming that the award for best video of the year should have gone to Beyoncé. From then on, the fight between Taylor Swift and Kanye West only escalated.
Lautner now tells the side of his story. The actor regrets misreading the situation and not standing by his, at the time, girlfriend. "I didn't know the Kanye thing wasn't a parody. I had taken five steps back. I could barely hear them." He continued, "I just assumed it was all a practiced and rehearsed parody. Because why else would Kanye West be jumping on stage and interrupting Taylor Swift? It just didn't make sense." It wasn't until the end of the speech that she realized it wasn't right. This is the first time the Twilight actor has spoken out about the incident but previously, he has shown his displeasure towards YE.
