Bad news for fan of the DC Universe: the series about Arkham Asylum is not going ahead at Max. Or at least for now. As Variety reports, the series isn't necessarily dead altogether, but this version of the project is not in DC Studios' production plans. Antonio Campos ('The Staircase') was to serve as showrunner-executive producer as well as director. The series started as a spin-off of 'The Batman' similar to 'The Penguin', but focused on the Gotham police. Then it mutated and they decided to focus on the Arkham Asylum asylum, and now nothing, it disappears from the future of the new DC Universe that James Gunn and Peter Safran are building.
The production was to be handled by Matt Reeves' 6th & Idaho in association with Warner Bros. Television and the director had this to say about it: "That story (Gotham PD) has evolved. Now we're moving into exactly what would happen in the world of Arkham, related to what you see in our movie and some of the characters - it's like a horror movie or a haunted house. I want Arkham to exist as a character. Go into this environment and meet these characters, and I want it to be amazing."
The series that will make it to our homes is 'The Penguin', with 8 episodes centered on Colin Farrell's character in 'The Batman' that will premiere on Max this September. In it we will see an Oswald Cobblepot who aspires to take control of organized crime in Gotham City, but Sofia Falcone, daughter of Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), will try to prevent him from taking over his family's fortune.
Then 'The Batman II' will hit theaters, for now scheduled for October 2, 2026, again starring Robert Pattinson as the superhero.
