A new trailer for Alien: Romulus, the seventh installment of the acclaimed Alien franchise, promises a dose of space horror for sci-fi fans. The recently released trailer offers a deeper look at the upcoming film directed by Fede Alvarez. The film will feature a cast led by Cailee Spaeny (Civil War) as Rain Carradine, Isabela Merced (Madame Web), Archie Renaux, David Jonsson, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu.
The teaser shows the crew of a spaceship struggling to survive deadly encounters with the fearsome xenomorphs, alien creatures known for their in-your-face attacks and chest blasts. Glimpses of the practical effects used to recreate these grisly scenes are provided. In fact, the new installment from director Fede Alvarez includes a shocking opening sequence that has already generated buzz. Actress Isabela Merced, one of the leads, revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that this sequence is so “disgusting” that during on-set screenings, it caused a dozen crew members to look away in disgust.
In addition, this sequence is partially shown in the first teaser, which features some disturbing fragments accompanied by dialogue. Also, according to Álvarez, it is a “disturbing and ambitious” scene that seeks to emulate the iconic start of the original 1979 film directed by Ridley Scott.
Alien: Romulus sits chronologically between Ridley Scott's Alien (1979) and James Cameron's Aliens (1986), the first two installments in the saga. Despite technological advances since the original feature's release, Alvarez acknowledged the importance of keeping the special effects as practical as possible, an approach that enhances the horror factor more than computer-generated effects. In fact, to achieve this goal, the director turned to the team behind the effects of Aliens to help take the story to the next chapter.
Alien: Romulus will arrive in U.S. theaters on August 16.
