As happened with several properties that had their peak of popularity in the eighties and nineties, the Ghostbusters franchise has experienced a resurgence in recent years, driven by Jason Reitman (son of original director Ivan Reitman) who revived the saga with an eye on a new audience, but honoring its origins. With Ghostbusters: Afterlife he took over where his father left off, adding new characters and faces of the moment like Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace, just to name a few.
In fact, two years after this installment comes a sequel under the title Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, a film that will continue with the Spengler family as the new generation of ghostbusters. However, all indications are that there are plans for a trilogy if audiences respond favorably to the latest entry.
For this new film, Ivan Reitman handed over directing duties to his colleague Gil Kenan, with whom he co-wrote the screenplay. In a recent interview, the latter admitted that they both have many ideas for this universe to continue to expand. "Jason and I love Ghostbusters," Kenan said. "We love these characters and would be very happy if audiences were willing to continue to go on adventures with them. If audiences feel that way, then we know what the next stories are going to be," the filmmaker stated.
According to the official synopsis of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family will return to the New York City firehouse where it all began to team up with the original ghostbusters. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, the new and old generation must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will hit theaters on March 21.
