Fifteen years since the project was first announced, the long-awaited remake of The Crow, starring Bill Skarsgård, has released its first trailer under the Lionsgate label. This new version, directed by Rupert Sanders, offers a contemporary take on the cult classic, which in fact, is originally inspired by James O'Barr's graphic novel and the iconic 1994 film starring Brandon Lee.
Skarsgård, known for his role as Pennywise in It and John Wick 4, gives a new life to Eric Draven, a musician who is brutally murdered along with his fiancée. A year after the tragedy, he returns from the dead thanks to a mystical raven that serves as his guide. Turned into a bloodthirsty vigilante, he seeks revenge against those responsible for his and his beloved's demise, using uncontrolled violence and his newly acquired supernatural powers.
In fact, the recent teaser maintains a gothic aesthetic and a dark interpretation marked by grief and loss. The British singer FKA twigs plays Shelly, his traig love. In addition, Danny Huston (Agent Under Fire), appears in an antagonistic role, along with Laura Birn (Foundation), Sami Bouajila (Heist) and Jordan Bolger (The King Woman).
Also, with a reported budget of $50 million, the production, co-written by Zach Baylin (King Richard) and Will Schneider, the film highlights by its gore style, which aims to "shock" and generate a sense of identification in young viewers, producer Sam Pressman told IGN. "It's not a studio feature, it's not a Marvel feature, it's kind of an anti-Marvel movie. I have high hopes for that," he added. However, some fans of the franchise made unfavorable comments, comparing Skarsgård's appearance to Jared Leto's Joker in Suicide Squad.
The Crow will hit U.S. theaters June 7, 2024.
