Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this true story based on the novel of the same name by David Grann, which is set in 1920's Oklahoma (USA) and shows how oil brought fortune to the Osage Nation overnight, but also how it brought misfortune to the nation in the form of white intruders who stole, extorted and murdered everything they could to gain control of the oilfields. In the midst of all this is the unlikely romance between Ernest and Mollie, played by DiCaprio and Lily Gladston respectively, with Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons rounding out the main cast.
The screenplay for the adaptation was co-written by Martin Scorsese and Eric Roth; the latter won the Oscar in 1995 for Forrest Gump, and has been among the nominees on subsequent occasions for his work as a screenwriter on acclaimed films such as Bradley Cooper's 'A Star Is Born' and Denis Villeneuve's 'Dune'.
Developed by Paramount and Apple, the film will have a limited release on October 6 and then jump to the rest of theaters on October 20 and then, it will be available on the platform. In others countries, Apple's press release only gives that first date while Paramount simply says "October".
DiCaprio will play Ernest Burkhart, the nephew of William Hale (De Niro) a powerful local rancher who becomes involved in the Osage Nation murders and is the husband of Mollie, an Indian woman played by Gladstone. Another character in the story is Tom White, played by actor Jesse Pleamons, the lead FBI agent investigating the murders. Also appearing in the film will be actor Brendan Fraser, who won Best Actor at the 2023 Oscars.
