Scarlett Johansson is suing Disney for streaming Black Widow on Disney+ simultaneously.
Even though most streaming services are streaming films that also premiered in cinemas.
Disney went a bit far with its decisions.
For example, WB and HBO have premiered movies like "Godzilla vs Kong" or "Mortal Kombat"
On cinemas first, and a couple of months later they premiere them in HBO max.
The Mickey Mouse company, however, did it quite differently.
They have been releasing their films on both cinemas and streaming services simultaneously.
Something that, sadly, affected terribly the box office numbers of Black Widow.
Which was one of the most long-awaited movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Consequently, the money gained from the box office wasn't what they expected.
The film premiered and broke post-pandemic box-office records, but the hype didn't last long.
People preferred to stay at home and pay for the movie on Disney+.
Something that worked pretty well for Disney, as they got all the money from the Disney+ payments.
While Cinema owners, and now the actors, are complaining.
The money gained from cinema tickets must be divided between a lot of factors.
The actress is now suing Disney, alleging that her contract stated that the film
Was premiering only in cinemas.
The lawsuit states:
Disney wanted to keep the revenues for itself while simultaneously growing the Disney+ subscriber base, a proven way to boost Disney's stock price. Second, Disney wanted to substantially devalue Ms Johansson's agreement and thereby enrich itself
Scarlet Johansson's lawsuit
Disney has qualified the lawsuit as:
especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This lawsuit has just started, and people are already wondering if it is going to turn back in favor of the actress.
