Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to the 80's classic, is about to hit the big screen. Since its release in 1988, the original film, directed by Tim Burton (The Chocolate Factory), has captivated audiences with its unique combination of comedy, horror and fantasy. Now, Warner Bros. has released an extended trailer that gives us a deeper look at the new plot and the return of the iconic characters.
As revealed in the teaser, we witness a great family tragedy that brings three generations of the Deetz family back to Winter River. According to the official synopsis: “Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town and the dangerous portal accidentally opens. With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time before someone repeats Beetlejuice's name and the demon returns to unleash his own mayhem.”
While it is interesting to revisit the characters from the original film, it is also exciting to see how both Burton and Michael Keaton, who plays the charismatic ghost, are once again having fun with practical effects. While there is, of course, CGI in the feature, the filmmaker made it clear that this time he wanted to return to his roots, working with friends and using as few computer-generated effects as possible. The new trailer showed some sequences with the use of stop-motion, a technique in which the filmmaker has experience thanks to films such as Frankenweenie and Corpse Bride (2005).
In addition to Keaton starring in the cast and Burton leading the project, the others actors are Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, Catherine O'Hara, Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe and Monica Belluci.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will hit theaters on September 5.
