The long-awaited trailer for Moana 2 is now available, announcing the return of Walt Disney Animation Studios' Polynesian heroine to theaters on November 28. Auli'i Cravalho will reprise her role as Moana, while Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will reprise his role as the demigod Maui. In this new adventure, the characters embark on a journey three years after the events of the first film, accompanied by a crew of unusual sailors. According to Disney, this voyage will take Moana to the far seas of Oceania, facing dangerous and forgotten waters, answering an unexpected call from her ancestors.
David Derrick Jr, Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller will be the one in charge of directing Moana 2, while Christina Chen and Yvett Merino will serve as producers. The sequel's soundtrack features Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, along with Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa'i and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina, both of whom were featured in the first film. Notably, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who composed iconic songs such as How Far I'll Go and You're Welcome for the original installment, will not return for this new installment, the studio has confirmed.
Moana 2 is a completely separate project from the new live-action version that Disney is currently developing. This version will feature Dwayne Johnson again in the role of Maui, but Auli'i Cravalho, despite reprising her role as Moana in the animated sequel, will not star in the live-action version. Cravalho will, however, be one of the executive producers in this new version. The film, will now hit theaters on July 2026 due to adjustments in the studio's release schedule.
