Australian director George Miller revealed that lead actress Anya Taylor-Joy had around 30 lines of dialogue in his new epic story Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, a prequel to 2015's acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road. In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Miller explained that he prefers “pure cinema” without the need for subtitles, inspired by the silent works of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin. ''The problem with dialogue is that it tends to slow things down, and film is a medium that is often best enjoyed at high speed,'' he stated. Though he acknowledged that Taylor-Joy's sparse lines are sure to be a talking point when Furiosa premieres at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.
The new film covers 15 years of the titular heroine's early life, from her childhood kidnapping to a full-scale tribal war. Miller noted that he conceived Furiosa and Fury Road simultaneously in the 2000s, initially as oral accounts for the cast before turning them into screenplays.
“Back then, I felt like I was learning how to tell stories. Now I'm trying to understand why we tell stories at all,” reflected the 79-year-old filmmaker, who has directed such varied films as Happy Feet and The Witches of Eastwick.
As for the making of this film, the filmmaker insisted on shooting the scenes in a practical way rather than resorting to computer-generated visual effects. “We had to figure out how to do it for real, because the brain is very good at picking up physics. If the movements of those vehicles aren't totally genuine, the audience is less likely to buy the rest,” he explained.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will hit theaters on May 24.
