Selena Gomez is one of the most famous artists of the last decade. The artist has been dealing with paparazzi, media covers, gossip about her private life, among others, since she was 15 years old. However, in all the time since the artist began to experience fame, she had never spoken about her bipolar disorder, until now. In addition, the artist has also told how during the diagnosis process, she realized that Taylor Swift is her only friend in the entertainment industry.
The artist, in a long and very intimate interview with Rolling Stones, talks about her life from a very young age and how she discovered her diagnosis. In the interview, titled "Selena Gomez wasn't sure she was ready to tell this story", she has texts written by Alex Morris, where Selena Gomez tells how between the ages of 24 and 25, she went through periods of mania and depression. “I’m going to be very open with everybody about this: I’ve been to four treatment centers,” Gomez tells now. “I think when I started hitting my early twenties is when it started to get really dark, when I started to feel like I was not in control of what I was feeling, whether that was really great or really bad.”
The periods of mania and depression could last for weeks or months. She never actually attempted suicide, but spent a few years contemplating it. “I thought the world would be better if I wasn’t there,” she says matter-of-factly."
Something like "her own particular stamp", but she felt very alien to the music world. That made her not share her fears openly, because the people around her were not familiar with what "fame" entails. “I never fit in with a cool group of girls that were celebrities. My only friend in the industry really is Taylor [Swift], so I remember feeling like I didn’t belong. I felt the presence of everyone around me living full lives. I had this position, and I was really happy, but … was I? Do these materialistic things make me happy?” She realized, “I just didn’t like who I was, because I didn’t know who I was.”
Everything got worse when the artist started hearing voices, which ended in an episode of psychosis. Selena says she remembers very little of that period. Her family put her in a hospital and she was in an episode of paranoia for several months. From that moment on, she started taking medication and began to feel a little better. However, the effect of the medicine made her feel “There was no part of me that was there anymore.”
