Not ‘Star Wars’, not ‘Avatar’, not ‘Jaws’, not ‘Titanic’ or ‘Ironman’… The highest grossing movie in history is Hollywood’s classic ‘Gone with the Wind’, directed by Victor Fleming, starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh…
Gone With The Wind, 1939
(An American classic in which a manipulative woman and a roguish man carry on a turbulent love affair in the American south during the Civil War and Reconstruction.)
Surprised? There’s a little trick though, the movie ranks first when grossing is adjusted to inflation. But still, it beats modern super marketed franchised productions. Of course, having been around since 1939 helped to achieve the $3,440,000,000 figure. It was nominated for 13 Oscars and brought home 10, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress.
Second on the list comes Avatar, with $3,020,000,000, followed by Star Wars, $2,825,000,000.
Avatar, 2009.
(In the 22nd century, a paraplegic Marine is dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission, but becomes torn between following orders and protecting an alien civilization.)
Star Wars, 1977 (Princess Leia is captured and held hostage by the evil Imperial forces in their effort to take over the galactic Empire. Venturesome Luke Skywalker and dashing captain Han Solo team together with the loveable robot duo R2-D2 and C-3PO to rescue the beautiful princess and restore peace and justice in the Empire.)
Of course if we look at the non-adjusted to inflation list, the podium changes, with Avatar leading, followed by Titanic ($2,186,772,302) and 2015 Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2,068,223,624).
But things have changed a lot since 1940 and putting everything in perspective, the classic production holds great merit. Just think of this: According to 1940’s Census, the median income for men in the US was around $956, whereas in 2015 it was around $30,000…
