After releasing this past January in the 2025 Sundance Festival, 'The Ballad of Wallis Island' is getting a limited release in the United States by Focus Features starting March 28, while Universal Pictures (who are taking care of the international release) has not set a release date for the United Kingdom, yet.
The movie is James Griffiths directorial debut, based on his short film from 2007 in collaboration with actors and comedians Tim Key and Tom Basden, who are both writers and the main stars of both the short film 'The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island' and the film.
The feature film, renamed 'The Ballad of Wallis Island', is a Baby Cow Productions project and also has Carey Mulligan, Sian Clifford and Akemnji Ndifornyen in the cast, still a very small cast but it works perfectly with the film setting.
Following a hermit lottery winner, Charles (Key), who is trying through all means to get his favorite musicians Nell Mortimer (Mulligan) and Herb McGwyer (Basden) back together. The ex-duet and former lovers, not knowing his true intentions accept to do a private show in Wallis Island, the remote place were Charles lives, and have to face each other and solve their tensions in the middle of nowhere.
After the screening at Sundance the movie has a 91% of positive score of Rotten Tomatoes with over 20 reviews, with some calling it one of the best comedies of the year, with very touching performances and well developed characters.
Let's hope that Universal reveals the UK release date soon enough, so we can enjoy this in theaters.
