If the crime Ricky Martin faces, the maximum penalty he could face would be 50 years in prison.
But what is the origin of this demand? It all starts with his nephew, Dennis Yadiel Sanchez, who claims that he had a romantic relationship with the singer that lasted seven months. However, the singer's lawyers don't seem to care much about the situation, or at least that's what they show, claiming that there is no conclusive evidence.
In fact, the lawsuit is for domestic violence and in Puerto Rico, where incest laws allow for a sentence of up to half a century if proven.
The first hearing of the trial will take place on July 21. It is there where the singer's nephew will have to prove the accusation he filed against him, which implies a relationship between blood relatives.
At first, the plaintiff remained anonymous, protected by Act 54, which protects victims of domestic violence; however, it was Eric Martin, the defendant's brother, who brought the name of Dennis, his nephew, to light. Eric claims that Dennis has mental problems, but that's not all; the 21-year-old's history with the law works against him: recently a woman, whose identity has not been revealed, denounced him for harassment after he threatened to destroy her life.
The nephew of the 50-year-old artist claims in the lawsuit that Ricky Martin consumed drugs and alcohol and that he was the one who decided to take the step to break off the relationship, this was what produced the aggression, since the singer "would not have accepted the separation" and therefore began to call him insistently and to pursue him. So far, Ricky Martin has insisted that the accusations against him are totally false.
