Quirt Evans, notorious gunman played by John Wayne, is wounded and on the run. He soon finds himself on a farm owned by a Quaker family, the Worths. Ignoring the advice of the town doctor, the Worth family takes Quirt and attempts to nurse him back to health.
While being mended to at the farm, Quirt dreams of the day that he is able to seek revenge on the man who killed his foster father.
At the same time, he is drawn to the daughter in the family, Penelope Worth. Wayne’s character soon has to make a decision; to continue down the path he has been following or create a new one with Penelope.
